The AKC fully recognized the Greater Swiss Mountain dog in 1995. This breed belongs to the Working Group of dogs. According to the standard, the Greater Swiss Mountain dog should stand about 25.5-28.5 inches at the shoulder. Females are usually smaller. Their height is from 23.5 to 27 inches. The Greater Swiss Mountain dog is slightly longer than it is tall.
The breed is tri-colored. The basic color should always be black. Other colors are rust and white. It is good if the markings are symmetrical. The coat is double. Though coat color is important, working qualities should be a priority when judging a dog.
Breeders should aim for stable temperaments as well. It is not recommended to breed too shy or aggressive dogs. Greater Swiss Mountain dogs should be faithful, alert, and hard working.
